In recent years, DStv has made streaming options available to keep up with the current viewer requirements. They wanted to create an even more holistic offering for their viewers by introducing DStv Internet, making home Wi-Fi a reality for even those who might not live in areas with access to fibre, bringing more possibilities and more entertainment to the people.
We were tasked with creating a film to launch their new product to the mass market in SA. To introduce DStv Internet, we led with a colloquial phrase that tells it like it is, in a way that only South Africans can – “Si Online”. This seemingly simple phrase carries with it a subtle bragging tonality that would make one feel like they’re missing out if they don’t have DStv Internet.
We carried that sense of FOMO into our execution where the antagonist, without DStv Internet, is left feeling out. The story is couched in yet another insight that’s true to SA, which is that corrupt people who have ‘connections’ and deal illegally are the ones who succeed. In our case, the connection is harmless, as our antagonist finds out in the end.
